Can anyone tell me with certainty the number of true barn theaters that are still operating as theaters in the United States? I am defining a barn theater as a theater that was actually built as a barn and at some point re-purposed and possibly modified to become a theater. I am a new employee at what is (by my definition) a true barn theater called Theatre by the Sea in Matunck, RI. I actually first worked there over 25 years ago when Tommy Brent was still producing shows.
This is an important question for us because now that the theater is being run as a non-profit entity the opportunity to distinguish ourselves by making the claim of being just one of four remaining barn theaters still in operation has possible ramifications for grants. This stat has been used by some people around the organization. If you can get me a researched or qualified answer I would be most appreciative.
